TE KAMOKAMO VINE

Kia ora Whanau!

Arohamai it has been such a long time since the last Kamokamo Vine.

The Marae is only now settling down after an intense and very busy start to the year.

We have a lot of possitive news to share this month. Also please continue to help us keep the Kamokamo interesting and fun by sending in your news and information.

FUN FACT

The name for autumn is ngahuru. One of the meanings of ngahuru is harvest. The saying 'Ngahuru, kura kai, kura tangata' (harvest-time, wealth of food, the wealth of people) indicated that food was pleantiful in autumn.

PROFILE

 TAMATI MASON

Chur my name is Tamati and I'm from Tauranga Moana. I've become a leading voice of many, along with others in a Rangatahi group. Our roles are placed for us (tuakana) to enlighten our Rangatahi with a positive attitude to life.

I enjoy chilling with the cuzzy's and also getting involved to encourage our younger Whanau, at the end of the day we are all Whanau, kotahi aroha.

I've been fortunate enough to have Whanau willing to give me a chance. Josh a tuakana gifted me a job which not only gives me the chance to mahi but also a plan for our rangatahi activities...wicked as.

WAIROA PAA RANGATAHI COUNCIL

The Rangatahi have been very busy and very proactive!!!

Over the last two months they have held three Council hui(every 3rd Sunday straight after the Runanga).

To be on the Council you have to be aged 13-25 years, and the older members(tuakana) are there to support and guide them.

If your tamariki are in this age bracket please let them know that it is open and at anytime they can join.

It is a positive kaupapa to be involved in!!!!

During the two months the Rangatahi have already organised:

• Sketch nights-Mahi Toi/Mahi Whakairo

• Homework nights and support

• Hikoi/run around and up our Maunga Mauao-Mahi Haakinakina

• Organised a Hapu Sports day down at the Kura

• Organised with Uncle Des Kahotea the recent 'Hikoi ki Te Irihanga'

• Held tunu kai classes where they learnt how to bake for themselves, did the catering for BTI Powhiri, ongoing learing in the wharekai and kitchen and helping during the recent Marae events and tangihanga

• Performed mau rakau and haka workshops for the Bethlehem College Noho, performed a haka powhiri for our Native manuhiri that recently stayed at our Marae as well as a kapahaka performance for them where most of our rangatahi have never performed before

• We also have monthly sleepover/noho at the Marae where they can continue some of the choice mahi that they have been doing.

And on top of all this exciting mahi..........the Rangatahi have been blessed with a classroom/hub/base of their very own.

A HUGE mihi to those who supported the rangatahi by paying for the removal of the classroom from Bethlehem Primary to the Marae.

We could not have done it without you!!!!!

Also we are asking for a little more HELP!!!

Does anyone know someone, who knows someone who can help us with the new Rangatahi whare?????

(Preferably for free/koha hehehe)

 Looking for:

A builder: (to draw up a simple sketch plan and any changes; installation of steps/ramp)

Plumber: (To connect up water supply from existing services to kitchen sink)

Drain-layer: (to do the same)

Sparky: to connect up power to existing services

There is not much to do, but we need these in order for our builders consent to be completed so the whare can be set-down permanently.......

We have had offers from a few of the whanau, so when we get our people in place we will have a working bee to complete the required mahi.

The Rangatahi/tamariki need your awhi and tautoko so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, or any whanau out there who know of someone....it would be a BIG HELP to us!!!!

 Tautoko mai whanau!!

NATIVE AMERICAN VISIT

Wairoa was blessed and honoured to have a Group of Native American Educationalists recently come and stay for 3 days.

The purpose of the trip was to share information in an effort to address Indigenous language and Education and to identify pathways for the implementation of the Maori Immersion programme in the states of Utah, Nevada and Arizona.

It was wonderful to share a few days with our indigenous relations and we look forward to continuing on the relationships and learning with them.

BETHLEHEM COLLEGE YEAR 9 NOHO

The Marae once again hosted the BC Year 9 Noho in March. The noho always starts on the Tuesday and runs through until Friday. The tauira all arrive on the Tuesday (about 250 students) to be called on. Afterwards  two classes stay behind and then the other four classes head back to school.

Then the next day two classes come back and the other two leave and head back to school...this continues until all classes have had their turn staying at the Marae.

While here the tamariki head out on a hikoi with Papa Glen Knap to visit the Awa and also to Pukewhanake Paa.

Then they come back and do a couple of workshops of either, Mau Rakau with Ruatepupuke Tairi-Ngata, Haka with Tamati and Mahi Raranga with Aleigsha and Keimarire.

And just before kai the tamariki have a korero with Kuia Ngaronoa Reweti-Ngata and they also present their Mihimihi.

It is a once in a lifetime chance for many of the tamariki and also for some of the parents who said they have never been to a Marae ever in their life.
